Mechanics Project

Design and construct a product and submit a report according to the project guidelines found at the links below:

Bottle Rocket

Design, construct, and launch a rocket to stay aloft the greatest amount of time. The rocket will be designed and constructed using a conventional 2-liter carbonated beverage bottle. The bottle rocket may be tested at WHS or at a Science Olympiad competition.

Wooden Bridge

Design, construct, and test a wooden bridge spanning a space of 35.0 centimeters using wood bonded by glue. The bridge will be entered and tested in the University of Cincinnati High School Bridge Building Competition.

Wooden Tower

Design, construct, and test the lightest tower, with the highest structural efficiency, capable of supporting a load of up to 15 kg using wood bonded by glue. The tower may be tested at WHS or at a Science Olympiad competition.

Wing Design

Design, construct, and lab-test two wing airfoils. One should be suitable for generating lift for low-speed aircraft. The other should be a low-drag design for high-speed aircraft.

Yellow Light Time

Work in a larger group for the purpose of determining the optimum yellow light duration for the traffic signals at intersections. Members of the large group will form smaller teams which will examine specific parameters which should be considered. Other group members will create and test a spreadsheet which calculates the optimum yellow light duration for specific intersections.
